#1: Pick a Date & Gather Help

Ideally, you’ll want to start planning your party a few weeks in advance to allow plenty of time for organizing and to provide notice to your neighbors so they can attend.

When selecting event hours, please be considerate of all who live in the neighborhood and plan to wrap up activities by 9:00pm.

While it’s not impossible to plan a block party alone, it’s a whole lot easier if you have multiple hands on deck. We recommend a group of 3 to 5 individuals to serve as the organizing committee.

#2: Village Resources

Looking to hold your block party in the street? A permit is required to barricade off your street along with a refundable deposit of $100 to ensure the safe return of the barricades after the event.

Permits are not required for block parties held on private property.

#3: Party Planning

Food and entertainment are essential aspects of a successful block party. Here are some ideas:

Food:

  • Potluck
    • Ask each neighbor to bring a dish to pass.
  • BYO
    • Everyone brings their own meal and dines together.
  • Barbeque
    • A good way to feed a crowd, grill up some burgers and hot dogs!
  • Cater
    • Everyone pitches in to split the cost of a prepared meal.

Entertainment:

  • Bean Bag Tournament
  • Sno-Cone Bar
  • Live Music
  • Face Painting
  • Arts and Crafts
  • Raffle

#4: Send Out Invites

Develop a plan for spreading the word that goes beyond simple word-of-mouth. Create fun invitations with details about the party to share with neighbors.

You’ll want to include information on the date, time, and location of the event, what (if anything) people are expected to bring, and the cost per person (if applicable). Give a quick overview of what people can expect at your block party too, in terms of entertainment and refreshments.
